There is no single best month
The right period depends on the experience you want: river viewing around Kasane, vehicle safaris in Moremi, or a mokoro route near Maun. Seasonal patterns help plan a trip but cannot promise the conditions on your specific day. Compare the supplier’s actual route and operating arrangements, then check a current forecast for the relevant departure base.
Dry months and game viewing
Botswana Tourism describes dry-season game viewing as generally favourable when animals gather around water. Winter is roughly May to August, with September and October also commonly dry. This is a planning tendency, not a sighting guarantee. Early drives can feel cold in winter; later dry-season afternoons can be hot. Wear layers rather than packing only for the daytime temperature.
Rain and greener landscapes
The summer rainy period changes vegetation and road conditions. Birdlife and greener scenery can be part of the attraction, but a route that works in another month may need adjustment. Ask how the operator handles weather cancellations, altered access and transfer delays. Keep electronics protected and check whether a rain layer is useful for the itinerary rather than relying on a universal seasonal checklist.
Delta floods are different from local rain
UNESCO describes the Okavango as an inland delta whose annual flooding can occur during Botswana’s dry season. Therefore, “dry season” does not mean dry channels everywhere. The flood pulse moves through a large system; a forecast for Maun is not a water-level report for NG32 or a distant camp. Ask the actual operator whether its chosen mokoro channels are usable.
Match the forecast to the place
The weather page on this site represents Kasane, with its coordinates and Botswana’s local time. It does not cover the entire delta or Moremi. For a Maun departure, consult a forecast for Maun and the operator’s local assessment as well. Forecasts are model guidance, not confirmation that a boat, road or walking activity can safely operate.
Book with a weather plan
Check the current cancellation and rescheduling terms for your chosen date and option. Leave room between a day safari and a separate onward journey. A refundable hotel rate and a flexible activity are separate contracts; flexibility in one does not protect the other. Reconfirm pickup and the route shortly before departure, especially when rains, flooding or heat affect local operations.
